The Sixers gladly expanded their list of available players Thursday night, welcoming Cheap Tobias Harris Jersey, Cheap Shake Milton Jersey and Cheap Matisse Thybulle Jersey back into the rotation after they’d missed the past three games because of the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

That trio helped the Sixers to another win over the Heat, a 125-108 decision at Wells Fargo Center. Milton had 31 points and seven assists in 27 minutes and Harris posted 18 points. Though Thybulle shot just 2 for 7, he picked up four steals and a block

Miami had only eight players again, with eight still sidelined for health and safety reasons.

The 9-4 Sixers next play the Grizzlies on Saturday night. Here are observations on their win Thursday over Miami:

Like they never left
If one was not aware of the context, there were no apparent signs that Harris, Milton and Thybulle had been unable to practice with the team until Thursday’s morning shootaround.

Harris came up short on his first jumper but made his next three field goals. Milton conducted the offense well as the second-unit lead ball handler, playing at a controlled pace in the pick-and-roll and putting Miami’s defense in suboptimal positions. He drew fouls, found rollers and picked out shooters. At the end of the opening period, Milton made an off-balance quasi-heave under tight pressure, not the first time this season he’s converted a difficult shot as a quarter wound down.

Milton totaled 43 points on 14-for-22 shooting in the two games prior to this recent absence, and there was certainly nothing to suggest the time away stunted his development.

Thybulle fouled Tyler Herro on a three-point attempt early in his first stint, though he was sharp from that point on defensively. His block on Heat big man Precious Achiuwa after falling well behind the play on a Herro-Achiuwa pick-and-roll was a nice display of the 23-year-old’s high-level closing speed, instincts and knack for disruption.

Even with three important players back, head coach Doc Rivers kept guard Cheap Isaiah Joe Jersey in his rotation, calling his defensive performance in Tuesday’s win “spectacular.”

The rookie stuffed a Herro jumper and was again competitive and attentive defensively. One quality Rivers likes with Joe on the other end of the floor is his let-it-fly mindset.

“Of course I probably won’t have the green light I had at (Arkansas), but the team is bringing me on for a reason and that’s to shoot the ball,” Joe said before the season. “They’re not going to bring a shooter on a team to not shoot the ball. That’s what I’m going to do. If they tell me otherwise, then I have to cater to that. But coming on, I really believe that they are getting me for shooting ability, and so I’ve got to do that to the best of my ability.”

Joe hasn’t been told otherwise and he drained four threes Thursday night, the third consecutive game he’s done so.

The Maxey-Simmons combination
A notable contrast: Cheap Ben Simmons Jersey first basket came with 4:46 remaining in the second quarter, while Cheap Tyrese Maxey Jersey first came with 1:28 left in the first half after a 6-for-6 start.

Simmons, who had a triple-double with 10 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, started alongside Maxey (15 points on 6-for-10 shooting) for a second consecutive game and continued to have his greatest impact offensively by driving and kicking out to shooters. Miami sagged off of him when he brought the ball up the floor and double teamed him on several occasions when he received it in the elbow or short corner regions, an approach that gave Simmons some trouble. The Australian had more success after halftime, pushing the pace effectively and slamming home a put-back dunk in the third quarter.

In the long term, the Sixers will need dependable solutions when opponents give Simmons an exaggerated amount of space, and perhaps one will sometimes be using him in the high post and searching for high-low actions with Embiid. That concept has looked promising at times, and Simmons obviously has experience from last year as a facilitator at the elbow. The Sixers’ best bet when Simmons handles the ball still seems to be eschewing half-court offense entirely and letting him be creative and explosive in transition.

Simmons missed a wide-open corner three in the middle of the second period, his third long-range attempt this season. It was a good look and clearly the right shot to take.

There will inevitably be heightened scrutiny of Simmons, his willingness to shoot and whether he improves offensively after multiple reports that the Sixers included him in James Harden trade discussions and then did not land the eight-time All-Star. Harden is now officially a member of the Nets and could make his Brooklyn debut Saturday. The Sixers are scheduled to play the Nets at Wells Fargo Center on Feb. 6.

Rivers was asked before the game whether he was relieved that the Harden drama has been resolved.

“I don’t know if I’m relieved,” he said. “I’ll just keep saying it, and I said it before, I like our team. I like the day after the trade and all that stuff that we are the same team. I think that’s the best way to answer that.”

Maxey’s offensive variety stood out Thursday as he scored on fast-break dunks, pull-up mid-range jumpers and catch-and-shoot threes. He’s the Sixer who’s boosted his stock on the court the most since Cheap Seth Curry Jersey tested positive for COVID-19 a week ago.

MVP-level Embiid not needed
Cheap Joel Embiid Jersey didn’t replicate Tuesday’s 45-point effort, and the Sixers didn’t require anything similar. Given Miami was still missing Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic, it wouldn’t be accurate to call the Sixers’ blowing out the Heat without a world-class Embid performance incredibly encouraging. Against a badly shorthanded opponent, the Sixers took care of business.

That said, it’s nice for the Sixers that Embiid only had to play 24 minutes after going 39 Tuesday, especially with a road back-to-back looming Saturday and Sunday against the Grizzlies and Thunder, respectively.

Embiid has played 35 or more minutes in five games this season and 27 or fewer in four. When there have been opportunities for in-game load management, Rivers has been happy to take them.

Playing without either 2020 first round draft pick, a shorthanded Knicks squad hung relatively tough with the Philadelphia 76ers through two quarters Saturday night before breaking down like Four Year Strong, and the bright spots were few and far between.

Prior to the start of the team’s first regular season home game at Madison Square Garden since last March, the Knicks announced that both Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley would not play due to injury. Each rookie sustained their boo-boos in Wednesday’s season opener; Quickley hurt his hip and is day-to-day, while Toppin sustained a strained right calf that required an MRI. He’ll be re-evaluated in 7-10 days, which, bah humbug.

But this is the NBA, where there are no excuses, so the Knicks still had to play the 76ers under normal rules. They did so while wearing their City Edition jerseys for the first time, which, if you weren’t already aware, are available for purchase! Nothing like some good old fashioned capitalism, baby. Here’s hoping any consumers who buy one of the basketball practice pinnies get the right number on both the front and back, unlike Reggie Bullock at the beginning of Saturday’s contest.

The starting five was as follows: Elfrid Payton, RJ Barrett, Reggie Bullock, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson. It was Randle who carried New York for most of the night, as Barrett struggled mightily and everyone else except for Mitchell Robinson and Cheap Alec Burks Jersey was downright bad.

Early on, Randle was rocking, hitting each of his first three shots and leading the Knicks to a hot start. But Philly kept calm, and ultimately caused Tom Thibodeau to call his first timeout only four minutes into the first quarter, with the Knicks up 10-8. Thibs loves that quick timeout.

Behind Randle and Burks, who scored 11 and 9 points in the first quarter, respectively, the Knicks played steady basketball through the first 12 minutes. At the end of the period, the score was tied 27-27.

The second quarter represented an opportunity for Dennis Smith Jr. to run the show with fellow benchman Nerlens Noel. It was an opportunity he would squander. DSJ and Noel were like an off, off Broadway show. Sure, it was taking place in New York, but nobody wanted to see it.

Midway through the second quarter, the score was tied 40-40, and Randle was doing stuff like this.

That play was immediately followed up by a Robinson steal that resulted in a fast break dunk, and suddenly a 9-0 run had the Knicks up by five.

Robinson’s first foul of the evening came with 5:45 to play in the first half. He would end the half with three fouls. He’d also end the game with three fouls! Coincidentally, Mitch’s first foul marked the start of a slide for New York. The 76ers soon went on their own 11-0 run to go up by six. At the half, it was 60-55 Philly.

The 76ers came out sharper than the Knicks in the second half, going up 10 after a few minutes. Before long, the lead had ballooned to 16. The Knicks never completely let go of the rope, but their efforts certainly won’t get them into a tug-of-war contest. At one point, Mike Breen noted that the Knicks had as many turnovers as field goals in the third quarter (6 apiece). By the end of the period, the Knicks were down 86-69, RJ Barrett was 1-13 from the floor, and bloggers were beginning to think about which band they should incorporate into the first sentence of their recap.

You can’t sugarcoat a pile of crap and convince someone it’s candy. The Knicks sucked tonight, and in the end this goes down as a 20-point blowout as the team falls to 0-2 on the season. But another year, this might have wound up a 40-point loss. Who says you can’t try to look on the bright side, even when you’re locked in a pitch black room?

Notes:

> Barrett was bad, but this sort of thing will happen to the 20-year-old sophomore. Overall, he looks much improved this year. Tonight’s stat line was mostly disgusting (10 points on 2-15 shooting, including 0-6 from three, plus 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 turnovers), but he did hit 6 of 8 free throws. Once again, we’re looking at bright sides in the dark.

> The only consistent offense came from Randle and Burks, who scored 25 and 22 points, respectively. Randle was mostly the good version of himself, hitting 11 of 15 shots (including 2-2 from deep) and adding 7 rebounds and 3 assists, plus 4 turnovers. Burks is the only player on the team showing a consistent ability to shoot from the outside. He shot 6-13, including 4-6 from beyond the arc.

> Besides a little flurry of fouls in quarter two, Robinson played quite well. He finished with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, and was very active down low.

> It was a balanced effort for Philly, led by Cheap Joel Embiid Jersey (27 points), and followed by Cheap Tobias Harris Jersey and Cheap Seth Curry Jersey (17 points each), plus Cheap Ben Simmons Jersey (15 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks).

> Payton and DSJ were both garbage. Honestly, just look up their numbers for yourself if you must.

> Despite getting absolute trash from the point guard position, Frank Ntilikina was kept chained to the bench until finally coming in with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter and the game already decided. So much for the theory that Thibs was giving DSJ all the minutes tonight and Frank all the minutes tomorrow against Milwaukee to keep everyone’s legs fresh or something.

Whatever’s going on with Ntilikina is weird, but at the same time, it’s up to him to show he deserves time on the floor. In two minutes tonight he recorded no stats, and the one shot he took was ugly.

The entire evening was summed up quite concisely by fomalhaut: ‘This game is not fun to watch.’

The Knicks are back in action against the Bucks at home Sunday night at 7:30. That one might be a schedule loss.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid might be a quiet guy in real life. When he’s on the court, though, he’s the furthest thing from shy. From the start of his NBA career, Cheap Joel Embiid Jersey has established himself not only as one of the most dominant bigs in the game but he’s also notorious for being a trash-talker on the court as well.

Former Utah Jazz center Cheap Tony Bradley Jersey has experienced Embiid’s mind games firsthand this week as he joined the Sixers for training camp after getting traded a couple of weeks ago. Although Bradley made it clear the trash-talking doesn’t necessarily bother him when he’s on the court, he did get a chuckle out of one of Embiid’s tactics.

For the first three seasons of his NBA career, Bradley played for the Utah Jazz. Outside of three games last season, Bradley never saw the floor as a starter primarily because he was behind one of the league’s best centers in Rudy Gobert.

As Bradley has had the opportunity to learn under Gobert for the last few seasons, the young veteran center was grateful to compete against one of the best at the position in practice. Now that he’s in Philly, Bradley will compete against Embiid, who has made it clear he’s not the guy Bradley played against in Utah.

“The very first day we were guarding each other, and I think after we finished, he says something like ‘this isn’t Rudy [Gobert] — this ain’t Rudy,” Bradley explained. “I just laughed because it’s different.”

Bradley then went on to praise Embiid for how good he’s looked so far this offseason. While everybody around the NBA knows Embiid is one of the best at the big man position, experiencing his skills firsthand is an entirely different situation, which admittedly left Bradley shocked at times this week.

Cheap Dwight Howard Jersey said Thursday afternoon that his “infamous” tweet in the opening hours of free agency about returning to the Los Angeles Lakers — only to be followed a short time later by him agreeing to join the Philadelphia 76ers — was the product of a misunderstanding over whether he officially had an offer to return to the defending NBA champions.

“At one point, I did,” Howard said with a smile, when asked if he thought he had an offer in the opening hours of free agency. “That’s when you saw the infamous tweet, because I really thought I was going back. But it was no offer.

“And I understand it’s a business. The Lakers did what they felt was in their best interest, and I’m just very thankful for them giving me an opportunity to come back to L.A., and to just have an opportunity to win a championship.

“It’s very difficult, but everything happens for a reason. I’m super excited about my purpose on this team, and moving forward.”

Howard rejoined the Lakers on a non-guaranteed minimum contract last summer, after it appeared his career was potentially over after an injury-plagued season with the Washington Wizards saw him appear in only nine games. But Howard revived his career with a terrific season primarily playing off the bench in Los Angeles, and helped the Lakers win a championship in the bubble earlier this fall.

While Howard said he was excited to be in Philadelphia, he admitted it’s been a whirlwind to adjust to moving to a new city and playing for a new team less than two months after the Lakers won that title in Orlando on Oct. 11.

“It’s been a step,” he said. “Every day has been a step into a different direction. It’s very hard. I just finished playing with one team, and I was headed up here to Philly a couple days ago and trying to figure out what mask to wear, and all my masks said Lakers on them. I was like, ‘I can’t wear this anymore.’

“So, it was pretty tough, just the adjustment from being on one team and playing with this team for a full year … we played basketball from October to October, and then now I’m with the 76ers, so just the clothing, being in Philly, I’m just trying to take everything in. But I’m very thankful and blessed to be part of this organization, and it’s been great so far.”

Beyond changing masks, Howard said another challenge was trying to keep his body right after the rigors of playing, essentially, from October to October with the Lakers, and now trying to pick things up with the Sixers a short time later. Still, he said he isn’t concerned about the quick turnaround, and that he feels good about where his body is at heading into the new season.

“I try to keep myself in pretty good shape to get ready for this season,” Howard said. “I wasn’t expecting it to start so early, but I’ll be ready and the main thing is just being there for the young fellas and just trying to help them out right now.

“It [feels] like we finished playing. I tried to take some time off, get off my feet, but just had the urge to get back in the gym, get back on the court, and try to get another championship.”
